Rocket Lab (RKLB): When the Crowd Hands You the Exit

Rocket Lab's Reddit-driven run, a tepid tech bounce and a CPI print steering the Fed's first cut: why an anticlimax suits an options trade.
Roasting Battle, Zero Punchlines
The letter takes its title from a mood rather than an event. Everything that was meant to be a climax in the early part of September arrived and then quietly deflated. The presidential debate was the loudest example. Both candidates spent an evening trading insults, one about court cases, the other about rally attendance and rumoured pet consumption, and both walked off looking mildly concussed. Harris got more clean hits in, which surprised people who had priced the exchange the other way. What nobody got was a line worth remembering. That is what I mean by an anticlimax: plenty of noise, no information.
Apple pulled the same trick in a nicer sweater. The new iPhone landed with all the excitement of a firmware update, and the staged outdoor event with its carefully inclusive warmth produced the feeling Germans call Fremdscham, embarrassment on behalf of someone else. Strip away the branding and the share price seems to rest on repurchases and the accretion they produce rather than on anything a customer wants to queue for. Meanwhile Palantir and Oracle dragged the sector back from its ugly start to the month. Tech found some swagger, the megacaps wobbled, and the index as a whole shrugged. Resilient, mostly. Nothing shook.
Fire and Ice at the Fed
The one event that might still land a real punch is the inflation print sitting between mixed jobs numbers and the September Fed meeting. The employment data pointed in opposite directions, so CPI ends up as tiebreaker for the size of the first cut, and the analyst community has split down the middle. Headline inflation looks docile. The trouble hides in the components with a temper: airfares, used cars, the cost of insuring the used cars. Any of those can put a bump in the road and reopen the argument about whether the Fed can declare the job done or whether this recovery still has potholes. The soft landing chorus has been singing loudly. I would keep one hand on the armrest.
The Reddit Crowd's Gift
Here is the part that matters for anyone who owns options rather than opinions. The Rocket Lab position covered in the full letter is approaching its exit because the stock has been carried higher by exactly the retail enthusiasm I flagged in the subscriber chat a few weeks earlier. The thesis came from the company; the crowd was the accelerant I expected to turn up. It turned up. Turning that down out of pride, or holding on because the story feels unfinished, would be the kind of mistake the market punishes with patience.
The lesson generalises. An options position has a clock inside it, and a rally that arrives early is worth more than the identical rally arriving late. When someone else's exuberance moves the underlying faster than your calendar required, the contract is doing its job ahead of schedule, and the moment to say thank you is while that is still true. Anticlimax elsewhere is what makes this stand out: in a tape where debates, product launches and sector bounces all fizzle, a name that actually delivers gets the exit it earned.
Fireworks or Just a Bump
So, the coming weeks. The CPI report comes first, and the reaction in rate expectations will say more than the headline figure, especially if the temperamental components misbehave. Then the September Fed decision, where the size of the opening cut settles whether the urgency the market has been pricing was warranted. After that comes earnings season, the venue where the argument over AI spending and megacap dominance gets decided one report at a time rather than on a debate stage or in an orchard-themed keynote. My expectation is more anticlimax and a market that keeps shrugging. That is fine. It clears the stage for the occasional name that refuses to join in, and the job is to be holding the contract when it does.
