Brazil (EWZ): Rent From a Standoff While the Pentagon Put Frays

Cartoon cover, Brazil (EWZ): Rent From a Standoff While the Pentagon Put Frays

Why a market leaning on a single backstop, a Hormuz oil shock and a Brazil ETF stuck in a moving-average tangle add up to an options angle on EWZ.

The Underwriter Nobody Pays

Every bull market I have traded ran on insurance the buyers never read. This tape carried several policies, and the letter argues that all but the last have lapsed. The Musk policy said anything he touched could only rise; then SpaceX, the biggest listing ever, slid under its issue price after insiders handed stock to retail, with an August unlock waiting to swamp the float. The scarcity policy said compute stays rare, so the data-centre binge could hardly miss; then a Chinese model brushed the frontier on a sliver of the hardware and priced intelligence like a dollar-store toy. The capex cathedral wants an appraisal.

That leaves the Pentagon policy. Night after night of strikes on Iran, Hormuz traffic down to a dribble, a presidential fork between a short truce and open war, and equities barely blink, because the consensus holds that the White House folds before crude breaks the index. Perhaps. My objection is structural: when the final backstop is a single man's pain threshold, every long holder has become the underwriter, and no premium reaches them. Meanwhile perfection is being faded. Banks printed record loan growth and spotless credit, TSM and ASML beat handsomely, and the stocks fell anyway. When good news stops lifting prices, the debate has left earnings and moved to what anyone will pay for them.

Brazil Arguing With Itself

So why does a letter about a fraying backstop land on a Brazil ETF? Because I let the Daily Doze heat map pick, and it keeps picking Brazil. The quant list flagged the ticker and the structure, and my job was checking whether the chart agreed. It did. EWZ gave back a chunk of its spring gains, spent the early summer building a floor, and now sits jammed in a knot of moving averages, exhausted sellers underneath, trapped holders above waiting for an exit. Neither camp has the energy to win, which is exactly the fight an options seller likes to referee.

The angle is an iron condor: a defined-risk structure that collects premium while the fund keeps arguing with itself inside its summer range, and loses if either camp suddenly finds conviction. Read that against the tactics in the letter and a tension appears. With index volatility artificially cheap, I want to own optionality at the index level, protective puts and call-funded collars, while being a net seller of it in a single-country fund whose range boredom has already carved out. Quant backing tilts the odds and removes none of the risk. The moment the range stops holding, the position goes, without ego and without averaging down.

The Refinery Keeps Score

The refinery tells me more than the barrel. Crude chops in a narrow band while crack spreads sit at records, heating oil and gasoil break higher, and European gas pushes back toward its wartime peaks. Treasuries have started trading off refined products rather than crude, the stuff that actually reaches inflation. Europe has a short window to refill storage before winter with Russia's hand on the valve, and Goldman's Brent scenario if Hormuz stays shut into autumn is the test the last policy has never sat.

The calendar leans European while the Fed keeps quiet ahead of July 29 and PCE waits in the wings: UK jobs and inflation early, a hawkish-tilted ECB on Thursday, Japanese CPI and flash PMIs to close, a long-dated Treasury auction midweek. The louder noise is Alphabet and Tesla on Wednesday, both priced for sizeable swings, Intel for a larger one. Further out sit the Canadian tariff biting on August 19, Ottawa's reply, and the SpaceX unlock. In a gamma-free tape I would rather be small and patient than heroic, powder dry for the day correlation snaps. Brazil arguing with itself is a modest way to collect rent while waiting for the argument that actually matters.
