Ethereum (ETHA): A Casting Call in the Cockpit and a Bullish Condor

Cartoon cover, Ethereum (ETHA): A Casting Call in the Cockpit and a Bullish Condor

How the public hunt for Powell's successor pushes creditors toward the exit, and why a bullish condor on ETHA fits the resulting weather.

Auditioning Pilots Mid-Flight

Picture the cockpit warning lights blinking while a steward wanders the cabin asking whether anyone on board fancies landing the aircraft. That is roughly where American monetary policy sits. Scott Bessent, the Treasury Secretary, has opened a public casting call for Jerome Powell's replacement while Powell himself remains belted into the captain's seat. The market's reaction was a shrug. Why fret over institutional credibility when there are rate-cut rumours on X to front-run?

My argument in the letter runs a step past the casting drama. The name that ends up on the door matters less than the queue of creditors quietly edging toward the emergency exit. If bondholders come to believe the incoming chair is there to print, cap yields, or polish the President's polls, they will price it long before any confirmation hearing. Long-dated Treasuries then demand extra for the privilege, and the asset the whole system treats as risk-free turns into the most uncomfortable seat on the plane. The evidence is in the tape: Japan's long end is blowing out, foreign holders are stepping back from UK and French debt, and Treasury buybacks are being murmured about in Washington like a shadow reboot of QE. Even Jamie Dimon has pushed $50 billion into private credit while warning that private credit could blow up the system: the fire marshal stocking kerosene for a thirsty crowd.

Air Money With a Ticker

Where does Ethereum belong in a story about who lands the Fed? A market that starts pricing a chair with an itchy printing finger tends to go hunting for assets nobody can print, and crypto has spent its entire life auditioning for that part. The previous issue wrapped a bullish condor around Bitcoin, the wildest thing BlackRock ever agreed to put in an ETF. This issue repeats the structure on ETHA, which takes the next most unhinged asset in the room and somehow packages it as a well-behaved fund.

For an options trader the structure carries more weight than the conviction. A condor with a bullish tilt earns when the underlying drifts the right way and stays inside a range. The letter is candid about the downside: a slide into the lower part of the range shows up as a paper loss that is uncomfortable rather than fatal, and a roll is the tool for handling it. Doubling into a sector is something I normally decline, yet with the entries staggered in time the pair smooths the book instead of concentrating it. And the bid-ask on ETHA options is wide, which the letter treats as a cost of doing business: the risk-reward carries the position, and squabbling over the fill costs more attention than the slippage costs money.

Blackout Until Early August

The calendar matters more than usual because the tape is running on fumes and nobody is checking the fuel. Corporate buybacks are blacked out through early August, trend-following funds sit close to fully long equities, and retail sentiment has just logged its steepest climb on record over a few months. BofA's risk-appetite gauge made its biggest leap ever and same-day call spreads dominate the flow. History says peaks in that gauge are followed by an S&P pullback within about a month. An ugly print or ill-timed geopolitical post can turn thin liquidity into a fast flush.

Then the details the headlines skip. JPMorgan beat on earnings per share while net interest income missed, card charge-offs kept climbing and a hefty tax benefit did the flattering; banks are paying prettier dividends while stacking reserves for a consumer they trust less than the press release admits. From here I watch Japan's long end, foreign appetite for European debt, how loud the Treasury buyback whisper gets, and whether the succession chatter turns into a name. Thin summer liquidity plus peak retail euphoria is exactly the weather in which the roll plan on a range trade matters more than the entry.
